Women of Title: Spotlight on Karen Van Holten

Resilience, Leadership, and the Pursuit of Excellence

In the heart of Fulshear (Houston), Texas, Karen Van Holten has been a dynamic force in the title insurance industry since the year 2000.

As the Owner and President of Majestic Title, Karen's journey from receptionist to CEO showcases the kind of grit, dedication, and passion that define her career.

A Multifaceted Leader

Karen wears many hats as President and CEO of Majestic Title, yet her primary goal remains clear: ensuring her clients and team thrive. She plays an active role in the day-to-day experience for clients from the minute they walk in the door to the care after closing. "Owning an independent agency is challenging," she admits, "but it’s incredibly rewarding to see the fruits of our labor through the growth of our team and company."

Falling into Title Insurance: A Serendipitous Start

Karen’s entry into the title world began with an unexpected favor during Thanksgiving week, filling in as a receptionist for a flu-stricken office. That week turned into a lifelong career, with roles spanning Escrow Officer, National Examiner, REO, and even oil and gas law, where she honed her expertise writing title opinions for major energy companies. “I like to tell people I’ve worked on title from beginning to end—from dirt to grease,” she says with a laugh, “when falling, always make sure you have a great place to land,” she concludes.

Mentors and Lessons Learned

Karen credits her success to several key mentors, including a spunky marketing rep, an influential leader in Texas title insurance, and an oil and gas mentor who guided her during her studies in Egypt. While she acknowledges the challenges posed by competitive workplace dynamics, she emphasizes kindness and the importance of lifting others up.

Advice for the Next Generation

Karen’s advice to newcomers in the industry is simple: build relationships and keep learning. "Don’t let competition breed animosity," she says. "This industry is small, and you can always use a buddy in title and you don’t want to miss an opportunity to be a resource or find one. You never see people who work at Starbucks hating on the people who work at Black Rock . . .Let’s Be like them.”

Her love for collaboration extends to her leadership style, likening her team to an orchestra: “Each part is different, but with the right leadership, they come together to make a beautiful song.”

Resilience and Passion

Karen’s why lies in her love for teaching, nurturing talent, and seeing others succeed.

“The title industry is one of a few industries that a person can start at the very beginning, with little knowledge or experience, and end up having a lifelong fulfilling career,” she says.

“I love watching people grow and develop and being a part of the journey in this industry.

"I absolutely geek out over the intricacies of real property law and title insurance.  You know how when you were a little girl and you would invite your friend over to play Barbies?  And, there were friends that you would let play with all of your Barbies, but not your favorite one?  But, there was that one friend that you would always let play with your favorite Barbie no matter what, because you wanted to share something special with them?  I treat my knowledge like my favorite Barbie, but the difference is, I want to share her with everyone.  The best part is when they think it is as special as I do, then I know that they have title in their blood too.”

She also draws strength from her faith, her supportive husband and business partner, her team, and the lessons imparted by her parents. "When things get tough," she jokes, "sometimes you just need a good nap with the dogs."

Legacy and Inspiration

Karen hopes her legacy will be one of inspiration and teaching. "I want people to remember me not just for my style but for what I taught them," she shares. “We need to be unabashedly afraid to lift others up without the fear of competition or rejection.  Be that kid on the playground that runs up to strangers and makes friends,” she advises. Resilience is her guiding philosophy, a word that encapsulates her ability to adapt and thrive in a demanding industry.

Beyond the Office

When not immersed in title work, Karen loves fashion and isn’t afraid to experiment with bold looks. And her favorite carnival game? Whack-a-Mole—a fitting choice for someone adept at tackling challenges head-on.

In Ted Lasso style of getting to know you. . .first concert? Favorite band?  She replies with Jesus Jones “Right Here, Right Now, if you don’t know”. And her favorite artist is the country star Tyler Childers.

Final Thoughts

For those considering joining the Majestic Title family, Karen extends an open invitation. "If my vibe fits yours, let’s connect. This industry has so much to offer, and I’d love to share the journey with you."

Karen Van Holten is not just a leader in title insurance; she’s a mentor, innovator, and a true embodiment of resilience. Her story reminds us of the power of perseverance, the importance of kindness, and the joy of sharing knowledge to inspire others.

Thank you, Karen, for being a radiant, impressively unique, and classy example of what it means to be a Woman of Title!

Meet Paula: Founder and CEO of RELTCO Title

With over 30 years of experience in title insurance, Paula Woodring is the powerhouse behind RELTCO Title, a national title agency she founded in 2013. Headquartered in Tampa, FL, RELTCO has grown to include seven additional offices across the United States, serving as a one-stop solution for national lenders, cell tower companies, and relocation specialists.

A Journey into Title Insurance

Paula’s path to title insurance began on the lending side, where she developed her skills before transitioning into the title industry. Inspired by her mentor, Pat at Beneficial Mortgage, Paula learned to work hard, embrace knowledge, and always lead with kindness—qualities that have shaped her leadership style and career. Her full story, as shared in Tampa Bay Business and Wealth (May 2024), reflects the determination and pride she brings to her role.

Overcoming Challenges

As a woman in the title industry, and particularly as a business owner, Paula has faced her share of challenges. The cyclical nature of the market, economic concerns, and the weight of being the sole decision-maker for her team are burdens she shoulders daily. Despite these hurdles, Paula remains steadfast, driven by her passion for the industry and the relationships she has built over the years.

Advice for the Next Generation

To younger women entering the industry, Paula offers this advice:

“Nothing is handed to you. Work hard, adapt to change, and keep pushing forward every single day.”

The effort, she assures, is always worth the reward.

Staying Motivated

Paula’s “why” is simple yet profound: the people. “The relationships you build in this industry make it all worth it,” she says. She maintains her confidence and drive through positive affirmations, surrounding herself with supportive people, and dedicating time to reading and charity work.

Beyond the Office

Outside of work, Paula has a surprising passion: fast, fancy cars. Her love for speed reflects her personal philosophy of “Work Hard—Play Hard,” a mantra that inspires her to balance professional success with personal joy.

Building a Legacy

Paula’s ultimate legacy lies with her daughters, who now work alongside her at RELTCO Title. While she hopes they will carry on the values she’s instilled, Paula also encourages them to carve their own paths. “They always have a choice,” she says.

Final Thoughts

Reflecting on her journey, Paula shares her gratitude: “I’m just a girl from the Midwest with a dream. Leaving everything I knew to start from scratch was terrifying, but it turned into something I’m incredibly proud of.” Her recent recognition, including being featured on the cover of Tampa Bay Business and Wealth and being named a 2024 Titan 100 of Tampa Bay, is a testament to her dedication and success.
